Reminder - Volunteers Needed for Shorebird Monitoring 2023

Thanks to all who have signed up for 2023! If you have not or may have missed the email, here's a reminder...

Volunteers Needed for Shorebird Monitoring 2023

The twelfth season of the incredibly successful Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds invites new and returning volunteers to make a big impact in 2023

The Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds (AAfCW) and the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Wildlife Division, invite you to make a difference for threatened birds at the beach as an official volunteer monitor. This stewardship effort is focused on Piping Plovers, American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, and Common Terns at beaches statewide from April through August.

Atlantic Coast populations of beach-nesting birds return to the Connecticut coast beginning in March from their wintering grounds, as far as the Caribbean. The cryptic nests of these birds are extremely susceptible to human disturbance, predation, and tidal washouts. To enhance the survival and productivity of Connecticut’s beach-nesting birds, volunteers monitor at locations across the state to observe shorebirds, record and report nesting data, and spread a “share the shore” philosophy encouraging positive actions everyone can take to help these birds successfully raise their young.

Training and orientation sessions will be held via Zoom webinars for new volunteers on March 11th from 10:00 - 11:30 am and returning volunteers on March 15th from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. During the sessions, volunteers will learn about the biology of the Piping Plover, Least Tern, and American Oystercatcher, how to monitor breeding pairs and chicks, volunteer organization and logistics, and law enforcement information. Virtual attendance by everyone planning to join us for the 2023 season is important to discuss the birds. For more information on the training sessions, please email the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds at ctwaterbirds@gmail.com.

This training session is co-sponsored by the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds (Audubon Connecticut, the Connecticut Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy), and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Wildlife Division.

AAfCW 2022 Field Update #13

This is the final field update for the AAfCW in 2022 with data through August 31. Volunteer monitoring has now concluded for the 2022 season. Staff monitoring will continue into the winter as shorebirds, terns, and waders continue to move through Connecticut. Staff will also continue to remove string fencing, signage, and exclosures from our beaches over the next couple of weeks. As far as we know, all fledged birds have reached juvenile stage and/or departed Connecticut.

If you have any data remaining for the 2022 field season, please enter it as soon as you can. If you would like, you can keep sharing sightings with us in the offseason via eBird. Wherever you visit on your own time, eBird can be a great tool, and you can provide us with your checklist via the share function to this email address (ctwaterbirds@gmail.com). You may also continue to report and banded and/or flagged individuals of any shorebird, tern, or wader species via direct email to us and CT DEEP.  Please bear in mind some reports of Piping Plovers in large groups are undoubtedly Semipalmated Plovers in migration, or possibly Sanderling, Semipalmated Sandpiper, and other shorebirds.

As previously mentioned, we will continue to share applicable events and waterbird conservation-related volunteer efforts from our organizations and partners throughout the remainder of the year. Keep an eye on our blog and social media for more photos and videos from this season, and watch for emails about an AAfCW volunteer Zoom event including results from this season's monitoring. Thank you all so much for your efforts, and we will keep in touch! We hope to have all of you joining us again in 2023, too.
