AAfCW 2022 Field Update #4

This is the fourth field update for the AAfCW in 2022 with data through May 24. We now have American Oystercatcher and Piping Plover chicks hatching on our beaches and offshore islands. Please give chicks as wide a berth as possible, using binoculars and/or spotting scopes to identify and observe them. The closer we are, the more of a threat we become - to nests, young, adults, all of our birds. Our birds should ideally act as if no one is around. Please heed alarm calls and remember that chicks may freeze in place if frightened, making careful steps and staying below the high tide line all the more important. Photographs or videos of birds are not necessary and can often stress them more. Please refer back to our YouTube training session for new monitors for more on observing chicks: https://youtu.be/E0putp6rFn4

Memorial Day weekend is traditionally the first busy beach weekend of the year, and it typically coincides with the first hatchling Piping Plovers and American Oystercatchers running around our shoreline. Additionally, Least and Common Terns are beginning to form colonies. We need all the help we can get to monitor beaches and speak to beachgoers during this critical time. The weekend weather should feature a mix of showers and sun with mostly near-normal temperatures. If the forecast turns out as expected, there should hopefully be less traffic on the beaches than usual. If anyone can help and put in some extra time at your location(s) with beach stewardship, especially on Memorial Day, we would greatly appreciate it! If you have your monitoring ID and your beach is closed to residents only, you can use the ID to enter if you explain you are there to monitor the shorebirds for CT DEEP. You do not have to schedule extra Memorial Day weekend monitoring in advance.

Please do keep in mind we would still want to avoid being on the beach during any rain or when the temperature is below 50, above 90, or when it is very windy, to keep the eggs and young safe. We never want to approach or enter any fenced areas, even as monitors. Please also know that our staff is monitoring every beach in Connecticut and all the offshore islands, and their data is not included below. We are working 24/7 with a terrific but small crew, and this is what makes your contributions all the more vital to the success of Connecticut's endangered nesting waterbirds. Thank you as always!
