AAfCW 2022 Field Update #10

This is the tenth field update for the AAfCW in 2022 with data through July 26. There were numerous volunteer (and staff) surveys skipped or rescheduled over the past week due to the extremely hot temperatures. The next several days appear to be more temperate with highs in the mid 80s most days. This should allow safe monitoring, but please continue to try to avoid the hot sun in the middle of the day, remember to drink plenty of water, and dress appropriately. Take it slow and be mindful of your safety as well as our birds.

We continue to fledge birds while more of our adults and early season young, now juveniles, are leaving the state for wintering areas in the tropics. As noted in the last update, it is important to record all new individuals passing through our Connecticut beaches, and to report and banded and/or flagged individuals. Please send information in your data reports and directly to CT DEEP and us. 

Nevertheless, we have plenty of hatchlings and fledglings of a few species still on our beaches. Please keep educating the public as much as you can. Your hard work in positive stewardship means more than anything. Our volunteers and staff have helped to ensure many of our birds were able to successfully nest despite constant disturbances and threats. We still have a month of volunteer monitoring to go, but so far, so good - thank you!
