AAfCW 2023 Field Update #2

This is the second field update for the AAfCW in 2023 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning April 27 through May 10. We had a lot of poor weather in the past couple of weeks that canceled many surveys, but the forecast over the next 10 or so days looks mostly very conducive to monitoring. Our staff have seen both Least and Common Terns at multiple sites in Connecticut the last few days apart from these reports. Please remember negative data is not included below, but we need to continue receiving it in our electronic submission form along with all other data all spring and summer. If you go to the beach for monitoring, you should file at least one report each time (or four if you see all four of our focal species). If you cancel your visit, you do not need to enter a report, but instead please email us beforehand. Contact us directly for any issues that arise, notable sightings, or day-to-day disturbances.

Please use one entry for each species, separating data and observations. Enter each species you do see as a new report. If you do not see any, or only see one, etc. you can enter your data and note it in the comments if it saves you time (e.g. entering American Oystercatcher sightings at your beach and noting that you did not see any Piping Plovers, Least Terns, or Common Terns). 

Keep in mind we will be seeing other shorebird and tern species at the beach as well, from Semipalmated Plovers in larger flocks, to Killdeer nesting as our Piping Plovers do, to other more rare terns like Royal Terns or Caspian Terns. Study identification from referring back to training, checking out our documents and literature, and reading all the field guides you can. Thank you all for your hard work!
