AAfCW 2023 Field Update #6 and West Haven

This is the sixth field update for the AAfCW in 2023 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning June 6 through June 20. While air quality has improved, we have shifted into unseasonable temperatures and some rainy days. The upcoming week should have ample opportunities for showers, sustained rain, and thunderstorms. Please monitor the weather conditions at your beach before you go out. If there is a likely chance of rain, stay home. Feel free to cut any visits short if it starts to rain, too.

The cooler temperatures and inclement conditions mean fewer people will be visiting the beach, and our birds will have more peace in general. We have had continued issues with predators of all sorts on all of our beaches. Please keep reporting any signs or sightings of them, and any human disturbances you note through the appropriate channels.

We are looking ahead to July 4th and the beach weather and celebrations that come with it. Our staff will be monitoring all over Connecticut during the holiday weekend and the day itself along with being present for fireworks displays in relevant areas. If you want to monitor for extra time on July 4th or during any potentially good beach weather that weekend, you are more than welcome to, thank you!

Finally, we have some more guidance for monitoring in West Haven. I apologize for all the delays and confusion, and we did not have foreknowledge of the dates of the road raising efforts, what would be closed or open, any information on the parking system, how the police would be treating cars parking on neighboring streets, and so forth. I appreciate all the efforts from our volunteers and local residents providing us with the information they had, and reporting back both positive and negative experiences. Here are the key points...

1. Volunteers and staff can park at Morse Park and cross the road at Morse St.
2. Access Morse Park on Morse Ave. via. Blohm St.
3. West Haven has all monitor vehicle and plate information that is now put into their system
4. West Haven Police will be notified (hopefully this week) that we are using the Morse Park parking lot for beach access for the purpose of monitoring
5. The parking vendor is completely out of the loop with this new plan for now
6. There is no vehicle access to Beach St. from Monahan Place to Morse Ave.

I realize that may be confusing, but if you check out Morse Park and those streets on a map on your phone or computer, it will help. I am sorry we have to work this way for now, and certainly understand if anyone wants to skip monitoring in West Haven, or wishes to change sites - just please let me know. This parking should be out of the way of residents and their respective neighborhoods, and feel free to tell anyone who asks (such as construction workers or city employees) you are there to monitor the shorebirds and present your CT DEEP identification badge. I cannot recommend parking anywhere else as police can be unpredictable and may ticket you for parking on a no parking or resident only street.
