AAfCW 2023 Field Update #9

This is the ninth field update for the AAfCW in 2023 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning July 19 through July 31. As we close out July and enter August, the final month of our monitoring season, we have plenty of young birds and even nests still on our beaches. The past week had yet more thunderstorms and severe weather along with very hot temperatures and high dew points. This much more temperate and comfortable week should allow for more monitoring and better safety for our birds in all regards.

Please keep letting local municipal staff, applicable law enforcement, and us know about disturbances, as guided by our protocols from our training sessions and documents. The summer beach and vacation season is in full swing now with many people heading to the shore for passive and active recreation, some of which can bother, threaten, and/or directly harm our birds, and may be illegal activities (e.g. dogs on the beach, large bonfires, ATVs, and more). We want to share the shore with our birds and neighbors, and in doing so everyone should be following local ordinances.

You may see string fencing and signage removed from some areas by our staff to "give back the beach" to local residents and beachgoers when no birds have nested there this season. At other times, fencing and signage will remain in place until the fall because we want to allow dispersing and migratory birds to be able to utilize the shoreline habitat at certain vital locations. Additionally, we will have string fencing removal days in August at our major sites, and we will ask for volunteer assistance once those dates and times are set.

Fall migration is in full swing, and there are a lot of new species and individuals that will be passing through Connecticut all of August. Please stay cool and safe, and enjoy our birds!
