AAfCW 2024 Field Update #8

This is the eighth field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning May 31 through June 5. Our birds continue to be in all stages of nesting, with some starting another nest now, some incubating eggs, and others tending to young. 

Keep in mind renesting can occur up to three times for Piping Plovers that lose their eggs to predation, tides, disturbances, and so forth. They may nest again in a similar spot, or they may move to a quieter beach such as Silver Sands or Hammonasset. We want to keep monitoring all sites into July, and all beaches with our focal species through the end of August.

Now that we have entered the beginning of meteorological summer, we turn our attention to the growing crowds of beachgoers visiting the shore. We want to keep educating them with a positive, friendly attitude, and a mind to share the shore with our birds. There is plenty of room for our nesting endangered species and people to still enjoy a day at the beach.

Thank you all for reporting new nests, disturbances, potential issues or threats, damaged fencing or signage, all of it! Everything helps to build the complete picture of what is happening dawn to dusk, seven days a week, at our sites.
