AAfCW 2023 field season ends/fencing dates

Today was the final day for the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds volunteer monitor field season. We have now completed monitoring for 2023! Congratulations and thank you to all who have helped us survey for our birds, keep an eye on habitats, watch for disturbances, and educate the public whenever possible. There would be zero fledged Piping Plovers, and a drastically reduced number of American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, Common Terns, and more, without you and our field staff.

Please submit any and all data and information you have for our season via our electronic form, and our final field update will be coming soon. You are more than welcome to share Connecticut eBird checklists with shorebirds, terns, and long-legged waders year-round when you go birding with us via the eBird share function - just use ctwaterbirds@gmail.com, thanks!

With that said, we have more events to come this fall, including two string fencing dates:

-Griswold Point 9/7 @ 9AM-12PM. We will meet at the park and ride off Exit 70 in Old Lyme at 9:00 a.m. Please contact Martha Rice, Volunteer Coordinator at mrice@tnc.org and ctwaterbirds@gmail.com for questions and to register. Don't forget waterproof shoes or work boots!
-Sandy Point 9/13 @ 10 AM. We will meet at the south end of Morse Ave.

Assisting helps AAfCW and aids CT DEEP staff and their busy schedules. It also limits the stress on our birds. Those who join us should remember a few things:

-wear sunscreen and a hat
-drink plenty of water or sports drink and bring a snack
-do not attempt to carry too many stakes as there will be enough volunteers and staff members so that no one should overexert themselves
-take a break when needed

In general we look for everyone we can to help out even if you are not a regular AAfCW monitor or volunteer - the more the merrier. It also makes for a more pleasant morning of bird watching and discussions on the beach. Please RSVP to ctwaterbirds@gmail.com if you will be joining us at Sandy Point, and mrice@tnc.org plus ctwaterbirds@gmail.com if you plan to attend at Griswold Point, thank you!

Best,

Long Beach fencing removal

Please join us if you can this Thursday at Long Beach for string fencing removal on what should be a beautiful day!

-Long Beach (B1-3) 8/31 @10 AM. We will meet at the west end of the parking area and tell the booth folks you're with DEEP.

Piping Plover hatchlings

Here's a short video from earlier this summer of one of our nesting Piping Plovers with two tiny hatchlings filmed while walking along the shoreline...

We are happy to know they are well on their way south to the tropics for the winter. Here's hoping they come back to nest with us and start their own family one day!

Bluff Point fencing removal *postponed*

Tomorrow's fencing at Bluff Point is now postponed to Monday, August 21, at 10:00am given the threat of rain and thunderstorms tomorrow morning. We did not want to have the chance of everyone being stuck out on the beach in poor or dangerous conditions.

Our other two dates remain the same and will hopefully have beautiful weather:
  • Long Beach (B1-3) 8/31 @10 AM. We will meet at the west end of the parking area and tell the booth folks you're with DEEP.
  • Sandy Point 9/13 @10 AM. We will meet at the south end of Morse Ave.
Please RSVP to ctwaterbirds@gmail.com if you will be joining us at any or all dates, thanks!

String Fencing Removal Dates

Below are string fencing removal dates for the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds!

-Bluff Point 8/18 @10 AM. We will meet at the gate and we'll transport folks out to the beach.
-Long Beach (B1-3) 8/31 @10 AM. We will meet at the west end of the parking area and tell the booth folks you're with DEEP.
-Sandy Point 9/13 @10 AM. We will meet at the south end of Morse Ave.

The late date for West Haven will allow more time for our birds to remain in safe areas of the beach, and for everyone to stay cool on a hopefully lovely September day for the extra walking involved this year.

It also makes for a more pleasant morning of bird watching and discussions on the beach. Please RSVP to ctwaterbirds@gmail.com if you will be joining us at any or all dates, thanks!

AAfCW 2023 Field Update #10

This is the tenth field update for the AAfCW in 2023 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning August 1 through August 13. Below are our string fencing removal dates!
  • Bluff Point 8/18 @10 AM. We will meet at the gate and we'll transport folks out to the beach.
  • Long Beach (B1-3) 8/31 @10 AM. We will meet at the west end of the parking area and tell the booth folks you're with DEEP.

We are now beginning to see more of our birds heading south for the wintering grounds. Piping Plovers in particular are now absent from a lot of our beaches. However, it is all the more important to record this negative data, so please report when you do not see any of them - or any American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, or Common Terns. Also keep in mind we can see migratory birds from out of state, and we especially wanted to record any that are banded and flagged. Thanks so much!
