AAfCW 2023 Field Update #8

This is the eighth field update for the AAfCW in 2023 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning July 6 through July 18. We are at the point of the season where most of our efforts are going to tallying hatched birds, spotting young and adults beginning to disperse and stage, and watching for disturbances and threats to their well-being. Thanks to everyone who has let us know about disturbances, and where appropriate, for giving law enforcement, animal control, or other authorities on the beach a heads up when seeing something. These agencies and municipalities hear from us all the time, and they will take it much more to heart if they hear from you, too.

With that said, we still have nests in various locations, including Milford's Least Tern colony. We should be seeing young birds through the end of our season on August 31 across Connecticut, and possibly even into September. Our staff regularly monitors into October, but we are more than happy to have you with us for the next several weeks as we ensure all of our new generations have the best start they can to their lives. Keep an eye out for unexpected species or new birds, too, especially those that may be color banded.

There have been numerous days of missed volunteer monitoring in July thanks to the frequent poor or dangerous weather. Our staff is in the field constantly, and we are always keeping an eye out even when the conditions are less than ideal while being safe, too. Please be vigilant about staying off the beach when thunderstorms are nearby or when it is dangerously hot. Also keep in mind that we always want to help beachgoers learn about our birds in positive, kind, and caring ways. This education is vital, but it is not an obligation, and anyone who does not want to chat with us can be wished well while we continue down the beach.
