Here are some photos taken mere moments ago by Rebecca Foster of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Wildlife Division, showing us why there should not be any bikes on the beach during bird nesting season. That is a Least Tern nest, and someone's bike came so very close to crushing it. The second photo shows how difficult it is to spot a nest even when stopped and actively searching.
The Least Tern is listed as "threatened" on the Connecticut Endangered Species Act. There is a time and place for everything, and riding bikes down the sand in the summer on nesting beaches is not one of them. We all love bike riding, dogs, sports, and more, but each of those has destroyed and killed young and adults beach-nesting birds in recent years. Share the shore and this post!
