AAfCW 2024 Field Update #3

This is the third field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning April 25 through May 1. More nests are coming each day, and some have been predated as well. Remember that only Piping Plovers have exclosures erected around their nests, and that occurs when it is "complete" with four eggs and the birds accept the exclosure. 

Our staff have seen both Least and Common Terns at multiple sites in Connecticut the last few days apart from these reports. Please refer back to our YouTube training session for new monitors for identification tips for these two species: https://youtu.be/Aa4YY_rbmEk

Keep in mind we will be seeing other shorebird and tern species at the beach as well, and that they may appear very like our focal species. This includes Semipalmated Plovers in larger flocks, to Killdeer nesting as our Piping Plovers do, to other more rare terns like Royal Terns or Caspian Terns. Study identification from referring back to training, checking out our documents and literature, and reading all the field guides you can. Thank you all for your hard work!
