AAfCW 2024 Field Update #12

 This is the twelfth field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning June 28 through July 7. Thank you all so much for the extra coverage and assistance for July 4th and the surrounding weekends. Most of our work on the beach was a tremendous success. There are always disturbances and some pressures on our birds, but we collectively made certain they were minimal.

We are at the point of the season where we anticipate there will not be any more new nests. Some birds are still on eggs - especially our Least Terns - and we expect more hatching over the next couple of weeks. If you are at a beach without any of our four focal species, you can continue monitoring through the end of August if you'd like, or you can switch to a beach with more of our birds.

Keep in mind we will be wanting to watch for fledged birds, juveniles, and migrating individuals for the next several weeks at all of our beaches (through August 31st). Our staff will be deployed everywhere for the same reasons. We will want to keep recording all our pairs and adults, including new arrivals heading south or moving around, and tracking hatchlings, fledglings, and juveniles. Remember to report banded and flagged birds directly to CT DEEP as well, thanks!

Our AAfCW and CT DEEP Wildlife staff will also begin to remove fencing and signage where no birds have nested this season and/or all birds have fledged. Please keep this in mind when checking our sites. This is done to help provide more space for beachgoers in "safe" areas as we give back the beach for recreation. Fencing will remain in place at sites with our focal species present that will also be utilized by migratory shorebirds and terns in July and August. 

Thanks again for all your effort, and please remember to stay home when it is dangerously hot outside! When we have temperatures in the 90s or heat advisories it is best to stay home unless visiting near dawn or dusk. No matter the day, dress appropriately, drink and bring lots of water, use sunblock, wear a hat, and take all precautions.
