AAfCW 2024 Field Update #13

This is the thirteenth field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning July 8 through July 15. The biggest story of the past week and upcoming period is our extremely hot weather. A cold front should pass through this week to make potentially Thursday and then Friday through the weekend more comfortable and safe to monitor. 

There have been numerous canceled monitoring sessions recently, and that is exactly what you should do when the temperature and/or heat index push into the 90s or above. Please remember to stay home when it is dangerously hot outside! It is best to visit near dawn or dusk if you do want to go out, but heed the tide as well. Always remember to dress appropriately, drink and bring lots of water, use sunblock, wear a hat, and take all the usual precautions.

The heat also means that many more people are visiting the beach as we are in prime vacation season. We want to keep educating them with a positive, friendly attitude, and a mind to share the shore with our birds. There is plenty of room for our nesting endangered species and people to still enjoy a day at the beach. 

However, if they are upset, angry, or annoyed with you, simply wish them a good day and keep walking. There is never a time where we should have antagonistic interactions. Hot days, alcohol, taking dogs or kids to the beach - all of this increases the chances people may get agitated, and we should do all we can to avoid and leave these situations.

If they are breaking local laws, quietly alert park/municipal staff, and/or the local police or CT DEEP EnCon as warranted. Please review your monitoring packet for relevant phone numbers and protocols. Your safety is more important than anything! Please be well and mindful at all times when monitoring.
