AAfCW 2022 Field Update #3

This is the third field update for the AAfCW in 2022 with data through May 16. As we get into the busy nesting season, it is absolutely vital that we are not a disturbance to our birds. Please do not enter or approach fencing. This includes checking for nests, taking photographs, picking up garbage, and more. We do not need egg counts and will not ask for them, and our colony nesting terns do not need exact nest counts either. If you are unsure if a bird is on a nest, that is okay, and can be reported as such. 

No matter our intent, if we are seeing birds use distraction displays to lure us away, dive-bombing us (terns), or hearing a lot of agitated calls, we should carefully leave the area immediately. At no time should we be moving birds off nests or feeding other birds/wildlife on the beach as this is a direct threat to the lives of our birds. We want to walk in the wet sand area below the high tide line at all times, scanning the beach with binoculars and/or a spotting scope, practicing all correct protocols.
