AAfCW 2022 Field Update #8

This is the eighth field update for the AAfCW in 2022 with data through July 6. We have now passed the Fourth of July weekend, and are heading into busy and hot summer beach days with birds of all ages on the shore. The data below counts all birds reported as juveniles as fledglings, and likely too many are still being reported as fledglings when they are hatchlings, too. We do have fledged birds, capable of sustained flight and independent of their parents, and will soon be seeing more of them reaching the classification of juveniles.

Please remember that while we are collecting data, equally or even more important tasks are noting disturbances, kindly and positively educating other beachgoers, and reporting everyday events like dogs on the beach (not creating an active take situation or direct threat to our birds) to local municipal staff or animal control officers. 

There will soon be birds both dispersing from Connecticut and others wandering to our state from the north and south. Some of our Piping Plover adults will be headed to the wintering grounds this month, while other birds - like American Oystercatchers not yet of breeding age - head north from the southeast to check on future nesting areas. Eventually, we will see staging groups with more individuals than we have observed all season for all of our species.
