Volunteer Fencing Removal Dates

CT DEEP Wildlife has established dates for fencing removal that could use volunteer help. As you may have noticed, the remnants of tropical cyclone Debby came through Connecticut last week and removed a lot of fencing and signage itself. Staff either repaired or removed these areas, so some work has already been completed.

The Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds would appreciate any volunteers who could help us out at:

8/20: Bluff Point at 10:00am
8/26: Long Beach sections one and two at 10:00am

These dates are rain or shine, but a high chance of thunderstorms will cancel them.

Assisting not only helps AAfCW but it also greatly aids CT DEEP staff and their busy schedules. It also limits the stress on our birds. Those who join us should remember a few things:

-wear sunscreen and a hat
-drink plenty of water or sports drink and bring a snack
-do not attempt to carry too many stakes as there will be enough volunteers and staff members so that no one should overexert themselves
-take a break when needed

In general we look for everyone we can to help out even if you are not a regular AAfCW monitor or volunteer - the more the merrier. It also makes for a more pleasant morning of bird watching and discussions on the beach. Other locations have been or will be taken down by staff only.

Fencing and signage at Sandy/Morse Points will be staying up into September to provide a high tide refuge area for our focal species and migratory shorebird flocks. If you would like to help out in the first week in September (after our season officially ends on August 31st) you are more than welcome to do so. Please email us at ctwaterbirds@gmail.com if you can join us for any and all dates, and thank you!
