AAfCW 2024 Field Update #15

This is the fifteenth field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning July 26 through August 6. We have had a lot of volatile weather with missed monitoring sessions due to extreme heat and humidity plus thunderstorms and heavy rain. Thankfully, most of our birds are of the age to handle all of this quite well.

We are now beginning to see more of our birds heading south for the wintering grounds. Our focal species may be or will be absent from a lot of our beaches. However, it is all the more important to record this negative data, so please report when you do not see any Piping Plovers, American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, or Common Terns. 

Some areas are primed for staging with dozens of individual American Oystercatchers grouping together more before heading south. Beaches that had no Piping Plovers may have some dispersing and migratory individuals now. Also keep in mind we can see migratory birds from out of state, and we especially wanted to record any that are banded and flagged. Thanks so much!
