AAfCW 2022 Field Update #11

This is the eleventh field update for the AAfCW in 2022 with data through August 7. Once again, there have been numerous volunteer (and staff) surveys skipped or rescheduled over the past week due to the extremely hot temperatures. Connecticut's latest heat wave should break on Wednesday after yet more dangerous temperatures and potential thunderstorms. If you do choose to monitor, please avoid the hot sun in the middle of the day, remember to drink plenty of water nonstop, dress appropriately, and do not venture out in rain and/or thunderstorms. Visit near dawn or dusk, take it slow, and be mindful of your safety as well as our birds. If the temperature is above 90, or the heat index near 95 or 100, you should stay home.

Most of our beaches now have more juveniles and migrant birds than hatchlings or fledglings. Nevertheless, some locations, like Hammonasset or Sandy/Morse Points, have Piping Plovers and Least Terns not quite yet fledged. We will see more diversity and abundance of shorebirds and terns throughout August. Please continue to report and banded and/or flagged individuals of any species both in your data reports and emailed directly to CT DEEP.

Please report all four focal species if you see them as their own entries. Do not enter others as a note on one sighting. You can let us know that you saw 1 juvenile Piping Plover and comment that you saw no other focal species, but if you spot American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, and Common Terns, they should be fully reported on their own. Remember that volunteer monitoring will continue through August 31 to capture the entirety of the nesting season.
