This is the fourth field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning May 1 through May 9. As was the case last week, more nests are coming each day, and more have been predated or impacted by tides. Please continue to report all nests that appear to be new directly to CT DEEP Wildlife including Laura (Laura.Saucier@ct.gov) and Rebecca (rsuzf@hotmail.com) plus AAfCW (ctwaterbirds@gmail.com). Please only observe and report and do not mark nests.
All monitoring visits should have routine data and information submitted using our online data submission form. Don't forget to refer to the YouTube training session for new monitors for clearing up any confusing points about monitoring and reporting to biology and more: https://youtu.be/Aa4YY_rbmEk
For example, when reporting pairs of birds, you do not need to report the pairs as adults. The adults category is for any unpaired adults. More terns will be arriving daily as well while they attempt to find a mate and start forming colonies.
Keep a careful eye on all the quieter beaches! As some Piping Plovers lose their first nest of the season they may move around to secondary and tertiary locations such as Silver Sands or Hammonasset Beach State Parks. Any of our beaches could see "new" pairs "arriving" now in such circumstances, and it is vital to know where they are as these places are typically very busy with people and other disturbances.
