AAfCW 2024 Field Update #7

This is the seventh field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning May 23 through May 30. Thank you to everyone for their efforts over the Memorial Day weekend! There are always disturbances that occur on our busy beaches, and most are unintentional - but being able to educate people positively with kindness, record and document any issues, and see that our birds and their young can be more safe during critical holiday periods goes a long way in ensuring their success for the season.

The most significant update is that West Haven has told us they will be opening Beach St. and the parking lot for Sandy/Morse Points at 6:30pm tomorrow, May 31st. This means that you should then park in the parking lot with vehicles/license plates you have previously submitted to us (and in turn I submitted to West Haven). If you did so, you will be on the electronic parking whitelist. If you have not, do not take that vehicle to West Haven as it will be ticketed.

We have a tremendous number of nesting birds at multiple locations in the state. We are working every single day to help protect them, and your assistance in doing the same is invaluable! Remember, the data is secondary to their safety. People are pushing them off nests every day and night now as they walk their dogs, try to take photos, go fishing, take a stroll, throw a ball with their kids, and so on. They are being pursued by predators and beachgoers while trying to feed their young. 

This is not meant to sound dire - only to remind us all that we want to do everything we can to be safe for them and ourselves. We want to monitor only in acceptable weather conditions, and to stay by the water unless it's high tide at sites where this puts us in a dangerous location (or if young are in our path). Patience, vigilance, and great binoculars and spotting scopes do wonders as we read the cues the birds provide to us. Ideally, they should not acknowledge us and act as if we were not there.
