AAfCW 2024 Field Update #10

This is the tenth field update for the AAfCW in 2024 with data provided from volunteer monitors spanning June 13 through June 18. Our birds continue to progress with more nests hatching, renests occurring, and hatchlings aging into fledglings. Thanks to everyone who has let us know about disturbances, and where appropriate, for giving law enforcement, animal control, or other authorities on the beach a heads up when seeing something. These agencies and municipalities hear from us all the time, and they will take it much more to heart if they hear from you, too. Don't forget that your monitoring packet has everything from phone numbers to municipal laws.

The big story for this week is the first heat wave of the season. Remember that in training we tell you to stay home if the temperature exceeds 90 degrees for your safety as well as that of the birds. If you feel it is extremely hot outside, then you may be even hotter in the sun walking down the beach through the sand for potentially hours. Our birds have to protect their eggs and young from the intense temperatures, and disturbances can be all the more deadly - us included. 

It is sometimes cooler at the shore (as it will be this week than say, Hartford) and more passable, especially near dawn and dusk, but keep an eye on the real feel temperature. If the heat index is in the 90s or above, it's still dangerous for all parties. Please feel free to cancel your monitoring and stay home as your safety is paramount when it comes to the weather. If you do go out, remember to wear light-colored and loose fitting clothing, drink and bring plenty of water, potentially cut trips short, and wear sunblock with a good hat.
